Finding Zen with Zentangle

One thing that you can always count on in life is that stress will always be around the corner. Whether it’s stressing about the little things like deciding on where to eat for lunch to big life decisions, stress is all around us.

While some stressors can be good for us (keeps you sharp and focused), being constantly on the edge however will take a toll on your health. Everyone has a way to unwind, from hanging out with friends to a quiet night in, however for me personally I prefer to unwind through art.

200Ever since I could remember, I have always been drawing. But as of late with things constantly piling up, I haven’t had much time to explore that creative side of myself. So when the gang at Ketchup called me up for this workshop with Zentangle at TEDBOY Bakery in Bangsar, I thought to myself “meh, what the heck, why not?

So what is Zentangle? “The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.Almost anyone can use it to create beautiful images. It increases focus and creativity, provides artistic satisfaction along with an increased sense of personal well being. The Zentangle Method is enjoyed all over this world across a wide range of skills, interests and ages.”

To give you an idea of what Zentangle is all about, it’s basically a form of art therapy. You start out with drawing up shapes in different sizes and such, and you build on it until you’ve filled up your paper. Afterwards, you’ll fill it in with colours of your personal choice, and you’re done. The process usually takes an hour or so, but trust me when you’re really into the process, time flies by really fast.

I have to admit, it was a nice change of pace after a while of being constantly on the go. I think this is one of those experiences where I will carry on with it in the future for sure. If you’re interested with the Zentangle Method, you can find them here. Also, shout out to TEDBOY bakery for the venue, the cosy atmosphere really helped me channel that creative being within.
